Many over-the-counter hunting options remain available

SANTA FE – The Labor Day weekend seems to mark the unofficial end of summer, however, the New Mexico Department of Wildlife reminds New Mexicans that there are many opportunities in the fall to get out and create memories with friends and family.

Those who were not successful in the draw are encouraged to take advantage of the Department’s many over-the-counter hunting opportunities.

A valid game hunting license allows hunters to pursue dove and other small-game species, including quail, grouse and pheasant. There are also may opportunities to hunt big-game species including javelina, Barbary sheep, cougar, bear and fall turkey hunts.

These tags can be purchased online or at licensed vendors and Department offices statewide or calling the Department’s Information Center at 888-248-6866 during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., closed for holidays). If you are unsure what licenses, tags and stamps you may need for your hunt, Department staff at area offices and in the Information Center can answer your questions.

Upcoming seasons

Here are some upcoming dates to put on your calendar:

  • Dove season: Began statewide Sept. 1
  • Fall turkey season: Began Sept. 1 for archery hunters
  • Teal season: Begins Sept. 12

The Department encourages all hunters to practice safe, responsible and lawful hunting as fall seasons approach. The latest Hunting Rules and Information Booklet and the Migratory Game Bird Supplement are available on the Department’s website and outline season dates, bag limits and other key regulations.

Preparing for a safe hunt begins well before heading into the field. Hunters are encouraged to scout their planned locations, confirm legal access and let someone at home know where they will be and when they expect to return.

Equipment readiness is another critical step. Ensuring gear is in good working condition and taking time to practice before the season, especially with firearms, can help prevent accidents and build confidence in the field.

Labor Day weekend offers an excellent opportunity for both seasoned hunters and those new to New Mexico’s outdoor traditions to begin planning. Early preparation, understanding the regulations and prioritizing safety can help make this year’s hunting season both memorable and enjoyable for hunters, families and friends.
