Shooting Program

The NMDGF Shooting Program offers a Responsible Hunter Program as well as opportunities for Range Development.

Youth Scholastic Clay Target Program members receive coaching at the Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club trap facility. Training improve proficiency with a shotgun through shooting trap, skeet, bunker trap and five-stand. The Los Alamos Young Guns also participate in 4-H archery and .22 rimfire disciplines.

Range Development

New Mexico Department of Game and Fish promotes and supports the development of safe, accessible target and sport-shooting facilities by taking a leadership role in partnering with ranges, industry, and communities. The Department provides statewide range development assistance through a variety of technical, educational and financial resources consistent with our goal of preserving current shooting opportunities while developing new ones, all available to present and future generations.

First-time shooter tries her hand at firing a shotgun at moving targets. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Outdoor Expo in Albuquerque provides a great opportunity to try various firearms including, shotgun, .22 Rifle, .22 Pistol, Muzzleloader (Blackpowder) and archery.

These Ranges Are Not Supervised by a Range Master

  • Location: 36.595139, -105.910767
    • From 4-way intersection in Tres Piedras, go 3.4 miles east on highway 64. There will be a closed gate on the south side of the road that you must open. (please close the gate after entering). From the gate you will continue straight on the road for exactly 2 miles. The road dead ends at the range parking lot.
  • Hours-Dusk to Dawn. Closed _______ for maintenance
  • Cost: Free
  • Offerings:
    • 200 yard range with 3 shooting benches.
    • There is currently not any target stand foundations. You will need to bring your own target. (please do not shoot at objects that leave debris, and take objects with you once you finish).
  • No facilities on site

    • 200 yard rifle range: covered shooting line with benches. Target foundations at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards.

  • 50 yard smallbore range: covered shooting line with benches. Target foundations at 25 and 50 yards.
  • 50 yard pistol range: covered firing line. Uncovered firing lines at 3, 7, 15 and 25 yards.
  • Primitive areas mowed down for archery and shotgun. (No targets or throwing machines are provided, please bring what you need to shoot).
  • Two vault toilets
  • Picnic tables

The Department and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Conservation Investment, provided funding to construct a 5-stand range and new warehouse

  • Location: 9617 Broadway SE Albuquerque, New Mexico 87105
  • Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 4 hours per day
  • Cost: 5-stand $10 per round of 5-stand (unregistered targets) $15 per round of 5-stand (NSCA registered targets)
  • $9 per round of trap (non-members). $7 per round of trap (members)
  • Offerings:
  • 6 trap fields
  • (1) 5-stand range with 8 clay target thrower

Mesilla Valley also offers 5-stand shotgun and sporting clays.
