CATCH THE NEW SEASON OF ‘NEW MEXICO WILDLIFE’

Big game and important survival skills are featured in the new season of “New Mexico Wildlife,” the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish television show.

“New Mexico Wildlife” starts its 14-week run at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, on KASA Channel 2. New episodes include a look at how the Department manages the state's elk herds, how to survive a night in the wilderness, stocking the Valle Vidal with Rio Grande Cutthroat trout and cooking tasty grub with Dan Brooks, the Cast Iron Ranger.

The show airs every Saturday at 6:30 a.m. on KASA Channel 2, and at 6:30 p.m. Sundays on KENW, Eastern New Mexico University’s Public Broadcasting Service station. It also airs at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays on KRWG Channel 22, the Las Cruces area PBS station.

This month's KASA Channel 2 lineup:

• Saturday, Feb. 13: Go for a hike to fish for Gila trout in Iron Creek in the Gila Wilderness; learn how to survive a night in the woods; and discover a secret family trout recipe.
  
  
• Saturday, Feb. 20: See how the New Mexico Habitat Stamp Program helps wildlife find cover; watch Rio Grande cutthroat trout being stocked in the Valle Vidal; fish for monster tiger muskies in Bluewater Lake; and check out the qualities of a good knife with knife-maker Jerry Duran.

• Saturday, Feb. 27: Join Department biologists exploring elk calves' struggle for survival  in northern New Mexico; hunt for elk at Vermejo Park Ranch; find out the proper way to field-dress your game; and make a New Mexican staple food, calabacitas, with the Cast Iron Ranger.

“New Mexico Wildlife” showcases the state’s diversity in wildlife and recreation while educating the public about conservation and the heritage of New Mexico. The show highlights a flexible system of management to provide the state’s citizens with wildlife for recreation and food.
