PRAIRIE CHICKEN FESTIVAL SELLS OUT IN RECORD TIME PRAIRIE CHICKEN FESTIVAL SELLS OUT IN RECORD TIME MILNESAND -- The popularity of the High Plains Prairie Chicken Festival reached an all-time high this year when all 100 spots for the April 16-18 event sold out in less than three weeks. The festival celebrates the lesser prairie chicken and the Llano Estacado (staked plains) of eastern New Mexico. Participants gather in Milnesand in southeastern New Mexico to see prairie chickens perform their remarkable early morning courtship dances. Visitors also learn about the cultural and natural history of the southern Great Plains, take daily birding tours, and enjoy good food and western hospitality. Attendance is limited to the first 100 participants who register and pay an entry fee of $95 per person. Registration is limited because of the sensitivity of the lesser prairie chicken during the breeding season. The festival is made possible through a cooperative effort of the Department of Game and Fish, the Nature Conservancy of New Mexico, the Grasslans Charitable Foundation, and the community of Milnesand. KRWG Channel 22, the Public Broadcasting Service station in Las Cruces, began broadcasting the program this month. It airs at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and will run for 28 weeks. KRWG also broadcasts in El Paso, Silver City, Deming and most of southwestern New Mexico. Many of the program’s video segments are available on YouTube.com at www.youtube.com/NMGameandFish. YouTube.com also offers educational videos, public service announcements and historical archives. Available footage includes former Department Director Homer Pickens’ antelope trapping operation in the late 1930s, and an informative video about releasing dogs from foot-hold traps. "New Mexico Wildlife" continues to air at 6:30 a.m. Saturdays on KASA Fox Channel 2 and at 6:30 p.m. Sundays on KENW, Eastern New Mexico University’s PBS station. "New Mexico Wildlife" showcases the state’s diversity in wildlife and recreation while educating the public about conservation and the state's natural heritage. The show highlights the state’s flexible system of management to provide wildlife for recreation and food supplies. The second season of "New Mexico Wildlife" will begin its 14-week run in February. Stories include wilderness survival, stocking Comanche Creek in the Valle Vidal with native Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and cooking sourdough blueberry pancakes on a cast iron Dutch oven lid with Dan Brooks, the Cast Iron Ranger.
