SANTA ROSA -- The New Mexico Game Commission will consider a recovery plan for two state-endangered rodents, hear status reports on the Mexican wolf reintroduction program and river otter restoration efforts, and open several regulations for prospective revisions during its meeting Friday in Santa Rosa. The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 11, in the Santa Rosa High School Auditorium, 717 South Third St., in Santa Rosa. The full agenda, detailed agenda-item briefings, and other information are available on the Department of Game and Fish website, www.wildlife.state.nm.us or by calling (505) 476-8008. ● A proposal to approve a recovery plan for the meadow jumping mouse and the Arizona montane vole, riparian rodents currently listed as endangered under the state Wildlife Conservation Act. The meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius) is found in the Jemez, Sangre de Cristo, Sacramento, and potentially the San Juan mountains. Recent surveys indicated a 67 to 91 percent decline in populations throughout the state. The Arizona montane vole (Microtus montanus arizonensis) is found in a very small region in Catron County. ● A status report on the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Program and the Department of Game and Fish focusing on more proactive, innovative management approaches. ● An update on plans to restore river otters to sections of the northern Rio Grande and the Gila River, and efforts to acquire otters from Oregon or other states. ● A proposal to open for public comment potential changes to small-game hunting rules, including limited hunting for lesser prairie chickens, more sandhill crane hunting opportunities, and adjustments to waterfowl hunts in areas of the Middle Rio Grande. The New Mexico Game Commission is composed of seven members who represent the state’s diverse interests in wildlife-associated recreation and conservation. Members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate.
