FREE WORKSHOP INVITES TEACHERS TO BRING ELK INTO THEIR CLASSROOMS

RATON -- Rocky Mountain elk are the focus of a free workshop for teachers from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Sugarite Canyon State Park.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and New Mexico State Parks Division are teaming up to provide a professional development opportunity for any interested educator, day-care provider, youth group leader or parent.

"This will be a valuable opportunity for K-12 educators to learn how to use elk to teach science, math and language arts,” Department Project WILD Coordinator Kevin Holladay said. Game and Fish and State Parks instructors will lead participants through indoor and outdoor learning adventures centered on elk and wildlife habitat. All activities meet Public Education Department Standards and Benchmarks in science, math and language arts.

Participants will receive the Project WILD Activity Guide K-12 and WILD About Elk Guide, plus other valuable educational resources. Lunch will be provided. Project WILD is a national supplementary wildlife education program for K-12 educators that has been shown to improve test scores.
