TURKEYS , QUAIL, WOLVES AND HATCHERY ON GAME COMMISSION AGENDA

ROSWELL -- The New Mexico Game Commission will consider long-range management plans and guidelines for wild turkeys and quail, and hear reports on the status of Rock Lake Warmwater Fish Hatchery construction and the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Program at its meeting Dec. 12 in Roswell.

The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Daniels Leadership Center of New Mexico Military Institute, 101 W. College Blvd., in Roswell. The full agenda, detailed agenda-item briefings, and other information are available on the Department of Game and Fish website, www.wildlife.state.nm.us or by calling (505) 476-8008.

Agenda items include:

  • An update on the construction of the Warmwater Fish Hatchery at the current Rock Lake Hatchery in Santa Rosa.
  • An update of the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Program, including the current population status of Mexican wolves in New Mexico, administrative actions over the past year, and upcoming activities of interest.
  • A presentation of draft guidelines for long-range quail habitat management, and a draft management plan for wild turkeys in New Mexico.
  • A proposal to approve a recovery plan for the narrow-headed garter snake, which is listed as threatened under the Wildlife Conservation Act. The snake is found in and along streams in the San Francisco River drainage in southwestern New Mexico.
  • A report on the potential effects climate change would have on wildlife and habitat in New Mexico, and how the Department can integrate global warming into species management and habitat protection strategies.
  • A status report and update on golden algae and its effects on the lower Pecos River.

The New Mexico Game Commission is composed of seven members who represent the state's diverse interests in wildlife-associated recreation and conservation. Members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. Current members are Chairman Alfredo Montoya, Alcalde; Vice-chairman Tom Arvas, Albuquerque; Leo Sims, Hobbs; Sandy Buffett, Santa Fe; M.H. "Dutch" Salmon, Silver City; Terry Riley, Tijeras; and Jim McClintic, Albuquerque.
