LEFTOVER PERMITS AVAILABLE AUG. 7 FOR 2007-2008 DEER, ELK HUNTS
SANTA FE -- About 2,000 New Mexico public-land deer permits and almost 60 elk licenses left over from the 2007-2008 drawing will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Aug. 7 -- only on the Department of Game and Fish website.
The permits are for hunts in game management units where the number of permits or licenses exceeded the number of applicants. They will be available -- first-come, first-served -- for a $6 application fee. Applications will be accepted only on the Department's website, www.wildlife.state.nm.us
Deer hunt permits will be awarded as soon as the applicant's credit card is approved for the $6 application fee. Deer hunters then must purchase an over-the-counter deer license. Elk licenses will be awarded when the applicant's credit card is approved for the license fee and the $6 application fee. All hunters also must buy a Habitat Management & Access Validation, and, if hunting on federal lands, a habitat stamp.
The leftover permits -- most for archery hunts -- were allocated for different seasons and management units statewide. They are valid for specified weapons, season dates and locations. These hunts, along with all the details, will be listed on the Department website. Hunters who already purchased permits to hunt deer on private land can apply for the leftover public permits and have their private-land permit voided by returning it to a Department office. Only one permit -- public or private land -- will be allowed per hunter.
Applications for leftover permits will be accepted until 10 days before a hunt begins to allow time for hunters to receive their permits in the mail. Hunters are encouraged to go online and choose and reserve their permits as early as possible. Applicants also are encouraged to visit the website early and establish or verify a user account and the associated user name and password. An account will be necessary to apply for the leftover permits and licenses. Establishing or verifying an account in advance will make the application process faster and more efficient, improving applicants' chances.
Overall, 35,654 of the 62,518 hunters who applied for permits in New Mexico's drawing for 2007-2008 public-land deer hunts were successful. The application deadline was April 10 and the drawing was conducted in late June. Hunters who were successful in the public drawing may not purchase another permit or license.
