BIGHORN SHEEP TRANSPLANTS, FEDERAL FUNDING ON GAME COMMISSION AGENDA
ESPANOLA -- Preliminary plans to trap and transplant bighorn sheep, a report on Department of Game and Fish federal funding programs, and a lease for hunting, fishing and trapping on state lands are among items that will be presented to the New Mexico Game Commission at its May 3 meeting in Espanola.
The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in Room AD101-102 of Northern New Mexico Community College, 921 Paseo de Onate, in Espanola. The full agenda, detailed agenda-item briefings, and other information are available on the Department of Game and Fish website, www.wildlife.state.nm.us or by calling (505) 476-8008.
Other agenda items include:
- A briefing on the Commission's lease that allows public access of State Trust Lands for hunting, fishing and trapping activities.
- A briefing on petroleum leasing on Bureau of Land Management lands and how leases relate to key wildlife resources.
- A description and summary of the Department's federal assistance programs and funding, including Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration, Dingell-Johnson/Wallop-Breaux Sport Fish Restoration, State Wildlife Grant, Landowner Incentive, and Endangered Species Act Section 6 grants. The Department receives about $13 million in federal revenue annually, which accounts for one-third of the Department's annual budget.
- A review of the U.S. Forest Service Transportation Planning and the Department's participation in the process to manage forest roads and travel. The planning is intended to reduce potential negative effects on wildlife species and habitats on all U.S. Forest Service lands in New Mexico.
- A proposal to approve the Department's draft recovery plan for the gray vireo (Vireo vicinior), a bird currently listed as endangered under the New Mexico Wildlife Conservation Act. The gray vireo is found in extremely scattered locations across the state and is considered a species of concern in North America because of its limited range and small population.
The New Mexico Game Commission is composed of seven members who represent the state's diverse interests in wildlife-associated recreation and conservation. Members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. Current members are Chairman Alfredo Montoya, Alcalde; Vice-chairman Tom Arvas, Albuquerque; Leo Sims, Hobbs; Sandy Buffett, Santa Fe; M.H. "Dutch" Salmon, Silver City; Terry Riley, Tijeras; and Jim McClintic, Albuquerque.
