RAMAH LAKE REOPENS FOR FISHING
ALBUQUERQUE -- Ramah Lake has recovered from last summer's drought-related fish kill and has been restocked with trout, the Department of Game and Fish announced.
The manmade 100-acre lake, 2.5 miles northeast of Ramah, was closed to all access in June of 2006 following a large fish kill believed to be caused by warm weather and drought conditions that had negative impacts on the oxygen levels and the overall health of the lake.
The Department stocked the lake March 12 with approximately 2,454 rainbow trout with an average size of 9.7 inches, and plans to stock more trout in the lake sometime this week, said Rick Castell, fisheries manager for the Department's Northwest Area.
The Department will continue to stock the lake as long as lake conditions remain suitable and fish are available. If anyone has any questions regarding Ramah Lake , they should contact the Northwest Area Office in Albuquerque at (505) 222-4700.
Anglers are reminded that the new license year began April 1. Licenses are available at vendors across the state, at Department offices in Albuquerque , Santa Fe , Raton, Roswell and Las Cruces , and online at www.wildlife.state.nm.us .
BERNARDO WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA VANDALIZED
BELEN -- An electric motor used to pump water into ponds at Bernardo Wildlife Management Area south of Belen was stolen and stripped of its copper wiring and parts sometime between March 31 and April 1, and the Department of Game and Fish could use some help finding the culprits.
The motor was attached to a lift station at the main entrance to the wildlife area, home to thousands of ducks, geese and cranes that use the ponds every fall and winter. After the thieves stripped the copper from the motor, it was dumped on the side of N.M. Highway 116 about three-quarters of a mile from the wildlife area.
Anyone with information about the theft and vandalism is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (505) 843-7867; the New Mexico State Police, District 11, (505) 835-0741; or Operation Game Thief toll-free at (800) 432-4263. Only Crime Stoppers can determine if a person is eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000 if information results in an arrest. Callers can remain completely anonymous.
